In the back and forth of Christmas gifts of the heart many are becoming home made. That kind of gift is so appreciated and the time, thought and energy that goes into the preparation makes is a Gift of the Heart. A friend of mine, Bonnie Marsh, also a wonderful innsitter for whom the bell tolls, gave us a magnificent one this past Christmas. We had to beat ourselves away from them and you will too. She had received it from a friend of hers (Carrie) and don't know whether she customized it some before she made the pretzels given to Gary and I but now I too have customized them into At Cumberland Falls Bed and Breakfast Inn's Spicy Pretzels. Make them at you own risk:
At Cumberland Falls Bed and Breakfast Inn Spicy Pretzels:
Pre-heat oven to 200 Degrees.
1 bag of Snyder's Pretzels. I used nuggets because they are easy to eat, not messy and hence subject to being crumbed all over the inn.
Spread these about a 13"X9" pan.
In a bowl:
1/2 pack of Hidden Valley Spicy Ranch Dressing (Bonnie used regular Ranch packet and they too were wonderful.) I just like the bite of a bit of heat.
1 tsp. garlic powder (more if you like)
A smattering of cayenne pepper. Don't go too crazy because if you are already using the Spicy Ranch, it could become too intense.
1 1/2 tsp. of dill. I imagine that you could use any spice at all you like. I made another batch as Dill/Chive and added a morsel of white sugar as I baked them and stirred trying for the salty-sweet thing I so love. I used fresh spice and think it made the pretzels what they were.
3/4 cup of vegetable oil or olive oil. (The next time I make these, I am going to reduce the oil to 1/2 cup and see if I think the flavor is adversely affected.
Mix up all the above until they are very well blended. Please feel free to experiment with the above ingredients as you wish. I did and produced great results.
Pour this mixture as equally as possible over the pretzels. Stir and bake for 15 mins, repeat this procedure until the pretzels have been in the 200 degree oven for one hour.
BEWARE.....THESE CAN BE ADDICTING AND I SHOULD KNOW!
